Flowchart, Gray Boxing & “anchor view”.
The initial stage of this UI design involved organizing and structuring information. By prioritizing and arranging elements like the Start Menu, Shop Menu, and Settings Menu, I began to establish connections and develop a flowmap that was both user-friendly and intuitive to navigate.
With solid layouts, I then proceeded to craft an anchor view — a high-fidelity screenshot — serving as the cornerstone for constructing a comprehensive style guide applicable to the rest of the design.
Building character
To entangle an unfamiliar world into the UI and capture it subtly. I began integrating minor elements, foreign-like "scribbles'' into the visual language, by experimenting with various patterns, drawing inspiration from old pre-Colombian and Viking-like designs.
The patterns, glossiness, and animations gave the UI a sense of fresh yet unusual visual finesse that aligned well with the game's concept.
Style Guide
The Style Guide served as the compass guiding the visual narrative of this project. Rooted in a modern UI, a mystery atmosphere, and a spirit of adventure, it established a foundation that resonated.
- Consistency! Consistency! I'm someone who easily strays of course with visual styles. That's why a Style Guide is an absolute necessity! 😆
Takeaways
Overall, this project was quick and fun. I had the opportunity to apply a significant portion of my prior understanding about layouts and graphic design, but I also spent quite some time scratching my head trying to figure out a totally new tool.
Being one of my first attempts at creating UI prototypes for games, it threw a bunch of challenges at me – all from creating a navigation system that functions effectively, is user-friendly, and grabs attention, to remaining aligned with the game's core concept.
